What is tonsillitis (tonsillitis)?

It is an inflammatory condition that develops in the form of redness and swelling of the tonsil tissue caused by viruses and bacteria. Viruses are responsible for about ¾ of tonsil infections and will heal spontaneously with supportive treatment. Bacteria are responsible for ¼ of it. The bacteria most commonly responsible are group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (Beta microbe). Antibiotics are used for treatment. Recurrent and poorly treated tonsil infections can lead to permanent problems in the heart and kidneys such as acute joint rheumatism and glomerulonephritis.
