Why is tonsillectomy performed?
Tonsil surgery is most often performed in children because of recurrent tonsil infection and/or tonsils that are enlarged enough to make breathing and swallowing difficult. In adults, in addition to these reasons, it can also be performed for reasons such as tumors and tonsil stones. Apart from this, tonsil surgery may be recommended if there is peritonsillar abscess (infection forming an abscess by going out of the tonsil), sinusitis due to chronic tonsil infection and fluid problem in the middle ear.
